CURT ROBINSON WINS FUNK LEGACY TOURNAMENT
Curt Robinson outlasted Jake Powers in the final round and six other wrestlers to become the first winner of the Funk Legacy Tournament on December 30. WWE Hall of Famer and former NWA World's Heavyweight Champion Dory Funk Jr. was on hand to present Robinson with the trophy.
"To be down fall to none in the finals, is nerve wracking." said Curt Robinson, "but to look out and see Dory Funk Jr. watching, it motivated me to a different level."
Curt Robinson defeated Tenshi X in the opening round and then punched his ticket to the finals with a hard fought win over former PWF Champion Victor Andrews.
"I remember when I was PWF Champion and Curt Robinson was just starting out. He was just a kid." Victor Andrews said, "I think I took his heart and skills for granted and it cost me. Sometimes, it takes the favorite to get knocked off to show him there is still work to do. This motivated the heck out of me and I hope to face Curt again. I won't make the same mistake twice."
Jake Powers, a trainee of Dory Funk Jr. at the Funking Conservatory in Ocala, FL went to a 10:00 draw with Trey Havoc in the opening round, which got both wrestlers promoted to the semi-final round. He then outlasted Havoc and the brash Christian Hunter in a Triple Threat Match to make it to the finals.
"I'm not going to lie, it was the hardest night of my career so far." said Jake Powers minutes after the tournament concluded. "To go to a time limit draw in the first round, then outlast two men in the second round, and then to face Curt Robinson in a two out of three fall final was a test of my endurance. But I make no excuses. Curt Robinson was the better man tonight, but tomorrow is a new day. The fans of the Crystal Coast know now I'm a main event player."
